John 19:30
When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
At this juncture of the crucifixion, we find Jesus nearing physical death and exhaustion. He was just given his last natural drink and uttered the words, IT is finished. It is Finished. And some who may not know of Jesus’ complete work or purpose may question, what was finished. The term finished means to bring a task or activity to an expected end or to complete it. It is something that was accomplished, achieved or completed successfully.
In our own personal lives we have some assignments, goals, and tasks that we set to do such as completing a college degree, building a house, running a marathon, starting a business, or even a weight loss goal. When the job, course, or task is done there is a sense of relief. You may respond with an exhausted statement saying, Thank God this is done or rejoice with a Hallelujah---it is DONE.
There was work given to Jesus to finish and HE acknowledged this work by asking God to glorify Him. Two chapters earlier we find Jesus praying and recalling the work He was set out to accomplish ….
John 17:1-4 After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed:
“Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. 2 For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. 3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. 4 I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.
God, the author, finisher, and creator of all things set in place for the birth, life, ministry, and now death of His only begotten son. What the prophets foretold was now accomplished —the scriptures were fulfilled. The prophets told us WHO HE was:
from the tribe of Judah,
Emmanuel,
the Messiah,
Wonderful Counselor,
Soon coming King
and they also told us WHAT he was going to do:
Open his mouth with a parable (psalm 78)
Stand as a banner for the people (Isaiah 11)
perform miracles (Isaiah 35)
Set captivates free (Isaiah 61)
Bring an end to sin (Daniel 9)
And this work was done, and Jesus, having acknowledged this, and all that he was sent to do, spoke with exhaustion and authority—'IT IS FINISH and as the scripture states he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
As we further dive into WHAT was finished, WHAT was accomplished: we find the term "it is finished" translated in Greek: tetelestai- (Te Tel Les tai) which means Paid in Full; debt is paid, the work is complete.
And that should excite us because we are all guilty but because of Christ's sacrifice, the debt was paid. In addition to this paid debt we receive so much more and why we give honor to our Savior:
What do we receive as a result of Jesus’ finished work:
Reconciliation-No longer separated from God as Jesus became the way, to the Father.
Redemption-No longer held captive by sin WE ARE REDEEMED
Expiation (X spee ay shn) (the act of extinguishing) guilt, shame, removed.
Propitiation (Pruh pii shee ay shn) (the act of regaining or gaining favor): Instead of receiving God's wrath, we now receive His favor.
Victory-Satan’s plan and power is forever defeated.
And finally,
Atonement-Christ accomplished all of this for us by dying in our place. He became the sacrificial lamb slain for you and for me. The Blood sacrifice was offered on our behalf.
Hebrews 12:24 (NIV)
"to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel."
" You have come to Jesus, the one who mediates the new covenant between God and people, and to the sprinkled blood, which speaks of forgiveness instead of crying out for vengeance like the blood of Abel." (NLT)
This WORD is Forgiveness.
Even in all this, all that we have done, He still choose to forgive us. Jesus became the mediator of the New covenant, the one who brought new agreement from God to His people. By the sprinkling of this blood, the Blood of Jesus Christ SPEAKS a better word.
His finished work Is complete.
I love the song “The Blood” by Naomi Raine and Dante Bowe. I was able to minister in dance to this song in 2021. The dance selection speaks about the Blood of Jesus Christ, its power, its authority, its protection, how it cleans us, it clears our Name. This is Good news that the blood still works.
